December 1, 2017 9:13 am

Name: Aidan Neville
Age: 13
Hometown: Point Pleasant, NJ

Tell us a little about yourself:
I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when I was eight days old through newborn screening. My treatments started that day, and I have never known anything different. Because we live at the beach, my love for the ocean started early… even before we knew about Hypertonic Saline being such a great therapy. I went to my first Mauli Ola Surf day when I was six and have been hooked on surfing and boogie boarding since that day. During the summer, I am in the ocean everyday and am at my healthiest. I also participated in my first kids’ triathlon with my cousin when I was six. I loved the swimming part and biking part, but the running not so much.

I also play basketball and soccer but my biggest passion besides boarding/surfing is football. I don’t play tackle, but am the starting QB on my flag teams. I love everything about flag football! I love learning and devising new plays and routes. I love connecting with my receivers for long TDs. I love reading my stats after a 5 TD throwing game. I love the camaraderie with my coaches and teammates. I was honored to win the Most Inspirational Player award for two seasons, and I made the All Star team as well. I’ve been really sick over the years and CF has tried to take so much from me. But I don’t let it. My nurse deaccesses my port so I can go to flag practice. I put off IV antibiotics so I don’t miss an important game. I delay sinus surgeries so I can make as much as the season as possible.

I was diagnosed with an immune disorder (in addition to CF) two years ago, which left me very sick multiple times at CHOP. My flag team supported me throughout and sent me to a JETS game when I got better. They are a huge support when times are tough. I’ve been through 35-plus surgeries and life can be really hard at times. My love for sports and teams have made it so much more bearable and gives me something to look forward to when I am feeling better.

What motivates you?
Flag football motivates me. My teammates and trying to get a win motivates me. Conquering big waves and getting barreled motivates me.

Why do you exercise?
I like sports. I like playing sports, I like watching and analyzing sports. I love being part of a team. I don’t think of my team sports as exercise because they are so much fun, but I know I feel great after doing it!

What do you want to be?
I love sports. I’d love to be a sports announcer. I memorize stats and plays like it’s already my job.

Who is role model?
My uncle Matt is one of my role models. He works really hard at what he does and makes the money to do nice things. He often includes me in these nice things! He worked hard in law school and is very smart. He’s also funny and sarcastic; I am very much like him.
