Tell us a little about yourself
About myself… well to start out I am someone that is extremely active and for fun I enjoy boating, spending time with my two little boys Landon (will turn 6 in September) and Liam (will be 4 in November). Also, I enjoy working out, just started Crossfit last month and LOVE it!! Anything involving water and being outdoors, I love!
“Anything involving water and being outdoors, I love!”
Tell us what motivates you the most.
The thing that motivates me the most is my family for sure. I know that I NEED to be healthy for my family and they rely on me to get them where they need to go and to be active in their little energized bodies! They are my world, along with my husband. I want to be a grandmother someday and also be able to experience their graduation, and beyond. I know that keeping myself healthy mentally and physically is the way to do this.
Why do you exercise?
I exercise because I feel AMAZING after a good workout. I completed a half-marathon and have done a few 5k’s now and the challenge itself is something that I have always loved. I have now been doing a lot of Crossfit, which incorporates weight lifting and cardio. I really like this strength training because you are doing things that you don’t ever thing you could even do! I previously was 90 pounds and NO muscle. It feels GREAT to have some muscle and be able to lift more items (especially a 55 pound sleeping child) :). I also exercise because I know that it is the best way to improve my lung functions and my overall physical ability to do things. Before exercising and eating a healthy diet, I was extremely sluggish, felt tired a lot, and also just didn’t take care of myself period. Now, I feel SO energized and my lung functions stay high and steady!
What is your go to song when you are working out?
I don’t necessarily have a go to song. But I really like going to Spotify and doing a mixture of rap/EDM/techno while working out to get me PUMPED UP!!
What advice would you give to someone with CF who wants to start exercising more?
My advice is to take it at YOUR pace. I know sometimes it can be intimidating to get yourself into a gym if you haven’t worked out a lot because first off, you probably don’t know what you are doing like I didn’t (and I’m still learning things everyday!)
I suggest you try to have a good support system, or a friend that will be willing to go with you to help make you feel more comfortable as well as keep you motivated. It is amazing how much a friend or family member being with you can heighten your spirits and make you feel much more motivated. I also would say to try to NOT overdo it. I have before – I went to the gym not realizing I had pneumonia – and ended up in the hospital because of that.
So take it easy if you are feeling sluggish, make sure you are drinking PLENTY of water and eating a good amount of food. Once you get more into it, just keep it consistent. I have learned that if you want to build muscle and tone with CF that you need to do a combination of weights and cardio a few days a week. This has worked so far for me! Also, healthy fats and carbohydrates as well as protein in a balanced diet can ensure that the digestive system stays healthy!
