Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, I’m Sydney Willig. I’m 13 years old. I am in 8th grade at Norwin School District in Pittsburgh, Pa. I enjoy playing soccer, snow ski racing, and water skiing. I also enjoy hanging out with friends, zip lining, and swimming. I snow ski for Deep Creek Winter Sports Team. I play soccer for a cup team called Foothills Soccer Club. This year I made Derby’s which is a State Championship out of a lot of areas which you have to qualify for. I was very exited and nervous but I did very well. I’ve had Cystic Fibrosis ever since I was 2 weeks old. I also have CFR which is Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes. I’ve had diabetes ever since 5th grade but since mine is different my diabetes could go away after a few years. I do not enjoy taking all my pills, do insulin, or having to check my blood sugar, but I know I have to do it to stay healthy and to avoid the hospital. This year was the first time being admitted to the hospital. The reason I had to go in was because my breathing test number was really low. When I was in the hospital I had to get a pic line in which is a tube that is in your arm and goes to your lungs to help get the medication in your lungs quicker. I was able to do anything I really wanted to do with it in, but just had to make sure the tubing was all wrapped up. I also had a diabetic seizure July 2,2016 when I was on vacation. When I had my seizure I ended up dislocating my shoulder. I live with my dog Hana, my mom Lisa, and my dad Greg.
Tell us what motivates you the most.
I am motivated to stay health and to stay out of the hospital so I don’t have to miss school, my friends, and sports.
Why do you exercise?
I exercise to stay healthy and to keep my lungs clear. I also exercise to try to stay out of the hospital. I also want to meet new people.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I want to be a teacher or I would want to play for the USA Soccer team.
Who is your role model?
My role model is Sidney Crosby and my friend Andrew who passed away from cancer. Sidney Crosby is a great role model because he is kind, caring, and also keeps going even if he’s sick or hurt. Andrew was a vey special person. He was a great role model because he never gave up fighting cancer. It doesn’t matter how old your role model is as long as they inspire you.
What is your message to other people with CF about exercise?
My message for CF people is to always exercise. The more you exercise the better chance you’ll have to stay out of the hospital and to keep your lungs cleared. Exercising you may be able to meet new people. Also, don’t ever skip meds or treatments.
